The President’s Medal of the Geological Society of America, commissioned in 2007, is conferred to those whose impact has profoundly enhanced the geoscience profession through (a) supporting and contributing to the Society; (b) advancing geosciences, enhancing professional growth, and/or promoting geosciences in service of humankind; or (c) significantly enlarging the range of scientific achievement for the growth of our profession. In 2020, the President’s Medal was awarded to Dr. Hsiang, Climate Impact Lab co-director and Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley. GSA’s Dr. J. Douglas Walker presented the award, saying: “Through this multifaceted approach, Hsiang and his colleagues are coming to answers on seminal questions central to managing our planetary resources into the future; what might be the economic value of the global climate, how effective are of treaties governing the oceans, and can satellites and artificial intelligence combined monitor the entire planet in real time.”
